Let us describe how the Anglican Church came into being. In 1534, Henry VIII, King of England, faced with the Vatican's refusal to annul his official marriage, separated from the Roman Catholic Church and created the Anglican Church.

King of England since 1509, Henry VIII was crowned at the age of 18. It was common at the time for parents to arrange suitable marriages for their children. Thus, Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon. An unhappy marriage. Catherine was unlucky enough to give the king a son (they had one daughter and five deaths in other pregnancies).

She had a lady-in-waiting named Anne Boleyn who had been in a relationship with King Henry since 1522. In 1533, Henry and Anne Boleyn secretly married. Henry then asked Pope Clement VII for a divorce from Catherine. The Pope did not recognize the marriage with Anne Boleyn, and refused to divorce Catherine.

Thus, for this reason and also due to other political differences that England had with Rome, Henry VIII broke with the Vatican and created his own church in 1534, which became known as the Anglican Church (English). The creation of the Church was confirmed by the English parliament through an “Act of Supremacy”. All possessions of the Roman Catholic Church within England passed to the Anglican Church.

Much of the population revolted. There are records of 72,000 deaths of Roman Catholic rebels who were unhappy with the separation.

Anne Boleyn, like Catherine of Aragon, did not give Henry VIII the son he so desired. Other factors led to Anne Boleyn being put on trial, where Henry accused her of adultery, incest and black magic. She was beheaded to death in 1536.

Henrique's son was the result of his third marriage, with Joana Seymor. His son Eduardo was his successor. Joana, however, did not survive childbirth and died.

Henrique's married life continued to be very complicated, always with the existence of extramarital affairs, political, family and power influences. In total, there were six marriages.

The Church of England has changed from being Roman Catholic to being Reformed Catholic, like Lutheranism and Calvinism. Its religious principles are composed of a mixture of concepts from Catholicism and Calvinist doctrine.

Anglicanism arrived in Brazil in 1810, through a trade and navigation treaty between Dom João VI, King of Portugal, and George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland, which guaranteed the English the right to practice their religion in Brazil. Anglican services then began to be held here. It is the oldest Protestant religion with services in our country, although it only grew significantly after the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, which separated the Catholic Church from the Brazilian State and made it possible for Catholics to convert to Anglicanism.
